The VivoBook 14 and the VivoBook 15 are Asus’ latest VivoBook laptops announced recently in India. A 14-inch Ultrabook billed as the world’s smallest, most colorful Ultrabook will be available at the end of the month. Certainly, staking claim to this title is strange and peculiar, but that’s the way it is. Asus’ new laptop series offers a compact design and mid-range performance. Read Asus VivoBook S14 Review to learn more about these beast laptops.
VivoBook 14 X412FA does not simply drop good components in an ordinary chassis, as that would have been an easy way to achieve this price goal. Instead, it comes in a variety of bright colors and has a sleek design with narrow borders around the display. With all those features, it seems like this laptop will be a fun little device. Now it’s time to see if it delivers what it promises.
It is an AMD-powered convertible laptop that provides an overall good balance between performance and design. Ryzen 7 processor makes a difference to the performance of the laptop, one of its best features. In general, the VivoBook Flip 14 comes with a good build its ports are functional, and its battery life is around 10 hours.
It doesn’t reach the heights of the simply superior Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14. This isn’t a major flaw, but the Flip isn’t quite as impressive as the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14. The Asus does outperform the XPS with a strong performance but the keyboard deck flexes a lot, the battery lasts shorter, and it costs $100 more. In addition to the latter, we recommend the VivoBook Flip 14 for budget shoppers looking for performance first.
We are extremely impressed with the VivoBook based on my initial impressions. The device is sleek, modern, and extremely in line with 2020 standards. The all-metal chassis offers a premium feel, but it is lightweight, which is especially important. Even though the Asus laptop weighs 1.4kg, it’ll be easy to carry from one room to the next in a bag and move quickly for errands.
This means that the device doesn’t support biometric unlocking in the absence of a dedicated fingerprint scanner. Asus VivoBook models with touchpads have fingerprint scanners. But here the number pad is only revealed by pressing the touchpad for a long time. If you plan to spend extended time with the laptop, We recommend connecting an external mouse to avoid feeling cramped and fiddly with the touchpad.
It’s good news that we have been able to type excellently on the VivoBook keyboard since there doesn’t seem to be any way to swap out this area seamlessly. Despite the fact that it does not offer quite the same level of precision as a mechanical keyboard, it is clearly well designed and offers a good degree of travel.
In addition, Asus laptops come with custom-made keys, making them stand out from the vast majority. In the color blocking entry key, you can use a splash of color without adding anything more. There are three different brightness levels available depending on the conditions on the keyboard.
This notebook’s wide range of ports is one of its best features. With its USB-C port, HDMI out, three USB-A ports, and microSD card slot, the device is very versatile. Most of these ports would require an adapter on other laptops, so it’s wonderful to see this. At this price point, it’s inevitable that charging would take place through the USB-C port, but it’s not possible in an ideal world.
With multiple color options, the VivoBook looks like it would be a stunning device for everyday use. There are several colors available for the Indie Black model we tested, including Gaia Green, Resolute Red, and Dreamy White.
As its name may imply, the VivoBook features a 14-inch screen with a 1920×1080 resolution. We’ve become used to laptop screens of varying sizes, but the 16:9 aspect ratio quickly becomes familiar because it sits in-between the two. As compared with a 13-inch device, it provides little difference in experience, although having more screen real estate when multitasking is always appreciated.
Display quality is pretty good, with good clarity and contrast, though the colors can appear a bit muted while you’re viewing multimedia content. For that reason, we would not recommend using it to watch videos. Despite the brightness being set at maximum, it was hard to see outside in direct sunlight, even at maximum brightness. With the highest setting, our results were significantly lower than many competitors.
The VivoBook comes with big bezels that can make it look rather dated in comparison to other laptops. Our review model does not have a front-facing camera that supports Windows Hello, so it seems like a waste of space. Some models include it, so make sure to check before buying. It appears to be available on certain variants according to the product listings. Even though many modern laptops regularly exceed 90% in terms of screen-to-body ratio, the 85% screen-to-body ratio is not unusual.
In addition to the 10th generation Intel Core i7-10510U processor, VivoBook also has 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. There is a UHD Graphics 620 chip from Intel on the graphics side. The new 11th-generation Tiger Lake chips that are available in more recent models should only enhance performance. However, it’s not necessary to pay more to get 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, and the configuration we tested is ideal enough for most people.
There was no problem opening multiple windows simultaneously, which makes it ideal for multi-taskers. The VivoBook proved its speed and agility across a variety of tasks, including word processing, multimedia consumption, and a little photo editing. However, the new generation of processors means it shouldn’t be as noticeable if using the i5 model. Benchmark results are presented in the following comparison against similarly priced devices such as the HP Envy 13, Acer Swift 5, and Lenovo Yoga C740.
Battery life and speakers
As these two aspects are integral to my use of a laptop, they needed their own treatment. Although Asus does not provide an estimate of battery life for the VivoBook, a 50Wh battery powers the device. An HD video loop test can therefore provide a more accurate measure of battery life. At 120cd/m2 (nits), the screen brightness was set. It took 8 hours and 38 minutes at that time.
Although battery life is inevitably impacted because the laptop was set to ‘best performance’, that’s still slightly below average. The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 and Honor MagicBook 14 recorded substantially different times, however, 14:26 and 10:43 respectively. Asus still has a lot to learn when it comes to budget laptops, as these are the top two entries in our chart.
Laptop batteries are significantly larger than those in smartphones, which explains why laptop charging speeds are significantly slower than smartphones. According to my tests, the VivoBook charged 24 percent off and requires two hours to fully recharge. Harman Kardon describes the stereo speakers from Asus as featuring ‘the best sound quality.
In spite of the big build-up, there were some speakers who were disappointed. Comparatively to the top laptop speakers on the market, they provide a good level of clarity and balanced sound. Increasing the maximum volume to fill the room might also be feasible, though that would inevitably introduce distortion. Bluetooth 5.0 is very useful for connecting multiple audio output devices simultaneously. In addition to the 3.5mm headphone jack, there is also a USB 2.0 port for convenient charging.
Price and value for money
In January 2020, Asus announced a high-end laptop called the VivoBook S14, but it wasn’t available till April. A very capable all-rounder at this price seems fair. Our best laptop chart includes many competitors that are significantly more expensive. Although there are not as many competing laptops as HP Envy 13, Acer Swift 5, and Lenovo Yoga C740. It should be more than capable of running Windows 10 in the future despite its reasonably large bezels and relatively large bezels. It offers good value for money, but for the best bang for your buck. Moreover, you can check out our post on the best budget laptops.

Despite its relatively strong multimedia capabilities, one of the problems it has is its ugly display. It isn’t designed to display videos well, so it’s not ideal for multimedia. We prefer a full-sized SD card slot instead of a microSD. Battery life isn’t bad for a device this size, but it could have been better.
The Nvidia GeForce MX230 GPU in the X412FJ-EK177T model will give you better gaming performance. If you’re looking for a compact Ultrabook with ample storage and fast performance at a reasonable price, the Asus VivoBook 14 is a good option.
